Їжак з протитанкових їжаків представив Україну на фестивалі Burning Man 2023 року.
Виготовлений зі сталі, дерева, маскувальних сіток та 100 протитанкових їжаків, «Храм Їжака» вийшов за межі просто інсталяції — він став уособленням сили та незламності українського народу, символом захисту України від повномасштабного російського вторгнення.

A hedgehog made of anti-tank hedgehogs represented Ukraine at the Burning Man festival in 2023.
Made of steel, wood, camouflage nets, and 100 anti-tank hedgehogs, the 'Hedgehog Temple' went beyond just an installation — it became an embodiment of the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people, a symbol of Ukraine's defense against the full-scale Russian invasion.

Певна річ, що вся творчість і проєктування в Україні зараз в контексті війни. Тому замість того, щоб шукати фінансування для інсталяції, яка представить Україну на фестивалі, створення Їжака навпаки мало на меті представити нашу країну і таким чином зібрати кошти для армії.
It is clear that all creativity and design in Ukraine right now are in the context of the war. Therefore, instead of seeking funding for an installation to represent Ukraine at the festival, the creation of the Hedgehog, on the contrary, aimed to represent our country and thus raise funds for the army.
Над створенням і реалізацією інсталяції працювала велика крута команда. Нашою ж задачею було по концепції розробити детальний проєкт, щоб втілити цю неймовірну ідею в життя.
Початкова концепція біомімікричного Їжака з протитанкових їжаків передбачала насипати останніх на кучу і надати їм форму їжака. Але згодом ідея трансформувалась — вигляд Їжака мав бути максимально наближеним до стилізованого реального образу — тож процес створення розпочався з нуля.

A great team worked on the creation and implementation of the installation. Our task was to develop a detailed project based on the concept to bring this incredible idea to life.
The initial concept of the biomimicry Hedgehog made of anti-tank hedgehogs involved piling the latter into a pile and shaping them into a hedgehog. But later the idea was transformed — the appearance of the Hedgehog had to be as close as possible to a stylized real image — so the creation process started from scratch.

Від початку формування ідеї до відправки контейнера з деталями в пустелю Невада у нас було 8 тижнів. На шляху проєктування ми щодня співпрацювали з конструктором, який за ніч перераховував конструкцію і видавав правки.
From the initial idea to sending the container with the parts to the Nevada desert, we had 8 weeks. During the design process, we collaborated daily with the structural engineer, who recalculated the structure overnight and issued corrections.
Паралельно інша команда тестувала надлегкі протитанкові їжаки, які мали наповнювати внутрішній простір Їжака. Виявилось, що навіть дерев'яні їжаки важать декілька десятків тон і така конструкція на ніжках буде занадто небезпечною для відвідувачів у пустелі, де порив вітру може сягати 65 миль за годину. Тому розробили їжаків з фанери і ще дуже довго підбирали правильне фарбування, щоб вони нагадували справжні.
At the same time, another team was testing ultralight anti-tank hedgehogs that were to fill the inner space of the Hedgehog. It turned out that even wooden hedgehogs weighed several tens of tons, and such a structure on legs would be too dangerous for visitors in the desert, where wind gusts can reach 65 miles per hour. Therefore, hedgehogs made of plywood were developed, and we spent a very long time choosing the right paint to make them resemble real ones.
Конструкція являє собою групу протитанкових їжаків, як ті, що були зварені простими українцями ще у перші дні повномасштабного вторгнення. Їх привезли до США, і там, посеред пустелі, зібрали разом у великого Їжака як символ української оборони та єдності проти спільного ворога.
The structure represents a group of anti-tank hedgehogs, like those welded by ordinary Ukrainians in the early days of the full-scale invasion. They were brought to the USA, and there, in the middle of the desert, they were assembled into a large Hedgehog as a symbol of Ukrainian defense and unity against a common enemy.
Весь проєкт і креслення розроблялися в Rhinoceros. Не обійшлося без оптимізації в Grasshopper та візуалізації в Enscape. Також створили анімацію в Blender.
The entire project and drawings were developed in Rhinoceros. It wasn't without optimization in Grasshopper and visualization in Enscape. Additionally, we made animation in Blender.
Тестову збірку всієї конструкції почали за тиждень, тому всі підгонки робились на коліні, а сітки для оболонки правильної форми шили в останні ночі.
The test assembly of the entire structure began a week before, so all the adjustments were made in a hurry, and the nets for the correct shape of the shell were sewn in the final nights.
В результаті маємо 7-метрового стилізованого їжака з металевого каркасу (який повністю розбирається, щоб команда могла зібрати його в пустелі), понад сотні протитанкових їжаків, які його наповнюють, і все це накрите маскувальною сіткою, що створює загальний абрис. Здалеку здається, що це просто їжак (тема фестивалю якраз була анімалія), але підходячи ближче, люди бачили його справжню сутність.
As a result, we have a 7-meter stylized hedgehog made of a metal frame (which is fully disassembled so the team could assemble it in the desert), over a hundred anti-tank hedgehogs filling it, and all of this covered with a camouflage net that creates the overall outline. From a distance, it looks like just a hedgehog (the festival's theme was animality), but upon closer approach, people could see its true essence.
У самому серці The Hedgehog Temple були історії загиблих воїнів та діячів культури. Фото й історії героїв, надіслали авторам проєкту їхні родичі.
Люди разом плакали, молилися та дізнавалися правду про події в Україні.
Так автори прагнули висловити вдячність тим, хто загинув, захищаючи нашу Батьківщину, і тим, хто продовжує стояти на варті.

At the very heart of The Hedgehog Temple were the stories of fallen warriors and cultural figures. Photos and stories of the heroes were sent to the project authors by their relatives.
People cried, prayed, and learned the truth about the events in Ukraine together.
This is how the authors sought to express gratitude to those who died defending our Motherland and to those who continue to stand guard.

Ми не можемо повернути загиблих солдатів і більше ніколи їх не побачимо, але ми маємо силу врятувати тих, хто все ще потребує нашої допомоги.
Метою проєкту був збір коштів на машини швидкої допомоги та евакуації для українських військових. Тому протягом заходу поруч із інсталяцією чергували медіатори, які розповідали про її місію.

We cannot bring back the fallen soldiers, and we will never see them again, but we have the power to save those who still need our help.
The goal of the project was to raise funds for ambulances and evacuation vehicles for the Ukrainian military. Therefore, mediators were on duty next to the installation throughout the event, explaining its mission.
